About me as a Therapist and Clinical Supervisor
I am a UKCP Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor specialising in Individual and Couples Therapy. I have a private practice in Exmouth Devon. My lovely bright, relaxing Consulting Room overlooks the beautiful Exe Estuary and The Haldon Hills beyond.
I have over almost 20 years experience as a Therapist and 11 yrs as a Clinical Supervisor in the NHS. Currently I have both a Private Practice, I am also Clinical Lead and Director in a Specialist Psychological Therapy Service based within Primary Mental Health Care. I work with a broad spectrum of clients. Among my areas of expertise are Childhood Trauma, Domestic Violence and Abuse, Low Self Esteem, Anxiety and Depression
In addition, I have published some of my work in The Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists In Primary Care Journal. I have developed various Psychotherapeutic Educational Courses over the last 10 years. I have been able to demonstrate through evidenced based practice that these courses are clinically proven to be effective in improving symtoms of Anxiety and Depression and Low Self Esteem. These are based on Melanie Fennel's approach to Low Self Esteem and Helen Kennerlys approach to Anxiety Management . Both these clinicians are experts in their particular field (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and have had a very positive impact on my clinical practice.
The Therapeutic Relationship is unique, it is a time when patients/clients can experience a non judgemental approach, the beginning of a developing rapport within which they can discuss their concerns, distress, thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I feel it is important to inform and encourage my patients/clients to be aware they have the right to say what they think, feel and believe about the issues they are concerned about. This is central, I feel to developing the openness and honesty needed to develop an on going therapeutic alliance.
Recognition, acknowledgment of the specific nature and complexities of the presenting issues/problems are important and contribute enormously towards acceptance, change and growth for the patient/client.
Therapy, I believe is a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand ourselves in a way that promotes and maintains change. In order for this process of change to take place it is vital the client engages and commits to the therapy, this often takes place over several weeks.
